To remove tattoos, several tools have been employed since the beginning of tattooing.

While tattoos are commonly assumed to be permanent, techniques are now available to entirely or partially remove them.

Prior to the development of laser tattoo removal methods, common techniques included dermabrasion, TCA (Trichloroacetic acid, an acid that removes the top layers of skin, reaching as deep as the layer containing the tattoo ink), salabrasion (scrubbing the skin with salt), cryosurgery, and excision, which is still used for larger tattoos in conjunction with skin grafts.

Several alternative tattoo removal methods have been offered in the past, including the injection or application of tannic acid, lemon juice, garlic, and pigeon poo.
